Today I want to talk a little bit about Youth and Tobacco use. CDC.gov is a great place to find a ton of information. Here are just a few details.
In 2007, 20% of high school students in the United States were current cigarette smokers—approximately 19% of females and 21% of males.
The goal for 2010 is to reduce that to 16%.
I strongly believe in "prevention is better than cure". One of the things we can do is make use of the educational material available to us by CDC. If you know someone who is under 18 and smokes and you want him/her to quit smoking, please get some educational material from CDC
- Scene Smoking: Cigarettes, Cinema, and the Myth of Cool
An hour-long video documentary discussing artists' rights, social responsibility, and the First Amendment. - Smoke Screeners
An educational program that helps teach media literacy skills. - MediaSharp
An important tool to help middle- and high-school youth evaluate messages about tobacco and alcohol.
